  The School of Languages

Our Mission:
 
The School of Languages produces graduates with the communication skills essential to taking part in and succeeding in both the international educational system and the Georgian job marketplace. We provide our students and our business clients with high-quality professional instruction and educational resources.  We work to improve
the teaching of all languages by developing and distributing materials for
teaching various languages using the latest methodologies.

Our Goals:

• To provide quality academic English language instruction;
• To improve our students’ critical and creative thinking skills;
• To prepare students for further academic study abroad, for employment,
or for professional advancement; 
• To maintain and improve upon our excellence in teaching foreign
languages through evolving new techniques for teaching and continuing professional development.
• To provide support to teachers of all languages throughout Georgia through
the work of our methodology centre and on-site teacher trainings.
 



Bachelor and Master Courses at UG
 
All bachelors’ degree students at the University of Georgia study English to prepare them for the workplace, studying abroad, or to enter our masters program, where all of our classes are taught in English.
 
After successfully completing Advanced Academic English, students will have the choice of a variety of courses that will develop the specific skills needed for their future professions.
 
Our Courses:
 
Elementary English 
This course aims to effectively and efficiently raise students' standard of English from a minimal level to one that allows for effective communication.
 
Pre-Intermediate English 
This course helps students to develop their language skills enough to be able to function effectively in a variety of written and spoken contexts in English.
 
Intermediate English 
At this level, students develop their abilities to read, write and speak more fluently and accurately in English.
 
Upper-Intermediate English 
This class helps students further refine their communicative, critical analysis and study skills focusing primarily on the development of academic speaking and writing.
 
Advanced Academic English 
This is a course in advanced academic writing that gives its students the skills needed to plan, research, and write a university-level research paper.
 
Business English 
In Business English, students learn how to communicate in English in an business environment
 
Public Speaking 
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles used in persuasive and argumentative speaking.
 
News writing 
In this course, students learn how to write news stories for print and television media
 
Short fiction 
This course deals with short stories written by American and British authors in the 19th and 20th centuries
 
Poetry 
Students study the major poets and poems written in English
 
Drama 
In this class, students study English plays from Shakespeare to the modern age
 
British Literature 1 
This course is a survey of the major works in British Literature from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century.
 
British Literature 2 
This survey course takes up where the previous left off, covering major writers from the start of the 19th century to the present.
 
American Literature 1 
This class is a survey of American literature from colonial times to the Civil War.
 
American Literature 2 
In this course, students study American literature from the Civil War to the present.
 
TOEFL Preparation 
This is a course that prepares students to take the TOEFL examination, a high score on which is essential for admission to a university in the United States.
 
GMAT Preparation 
In this class, students prepare to take the GMAT examination.
 
IELTS Preparation 
This is a course that prepares students to take the IELTS examination, a high score on which is essential for admission to a university in Britain..
 
Beginning in September 2006, the School of Languages will offer the following new courses for a certificate in translation/interpretation, including:

•  Introduction to Translation & Interpreting
•  Fundamentals of Translation
•  Fundamentals of Interpreting
•  Technology for Translators & Interpreters
•  Ethics and Business Practice of Translation & Interpreting
•  Translation Practicum
•  Interpretation Practicum


Classes for Businesses and Individuals
 
At UG we believe that communication is essential to the success of any business.  The more effectively the staff of any business can communicate with the rest of the world, the more successful it will be.
 
The School of Languages of is ready to provide language lessons using the latest methodology and produce original materials to suit the specific needs of any business.  We can tailor a program to fit its requirements and hold classes for its employees either here at UG or at their workplace.
 
We also offer languages courses to individuals who wish to learn a language.
 
We have specialists in the following languages: English, Georgian, Russian, Armenian, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, French, German, Azeri, Dutch, Greek, and Turkish.

Methodology Centre 
Our Mission:
 
The mission of the School of Languages Methodology Centre is to support language teachers
in Georgia by gathering, adapting, and translating the latest research, methodologies, and activities
into Georgian, often for the first time. 
 
Our Goals:
•  To raise the quality of foreign language instruction in Georgian schools and universities;
•  To gather in one place the latest information about language teaching methodologies and activities;
•  To be a place for teachers of all languages to find support and professional development;
•  To build a community of teachers;
•  To produce original materials based on best practices in used in language classrooms.
 

Intensive Caucasian Language Summer Programs
 
The School of Languages of the University of Georgia offers intensive summer courses
in Caucasian languages, politics, and culture.  We can tailor a program to fit your needs, but generally,
the School of Languages will provide:
 

•  A qualified instructor experienced in teaching adult Americans
•  Texts and other materials created using the latest communicative methods
•  A modern classroom
•  A host family that has been screened in housing that has been inspected
•  Lecturers in politics, culture, and other subjects, if desired
•  Excursions to historical sites in Georgia,  if desired

Languages Offered:
 
Georgian, Russian, Armenian, and Azeri.  Should you desire to learn other languages,
from the Caucasus or not, we can provide a qualified lecturer for you.
 
The Classes:
 
The classes are taught by qualified specialists using the latest methodologies. 
Most work will be done one-on-one, but small group practice is also possible,
should there be other students enrolled at the time.
 
Program Dates:
 
We are very flexible concerning the periods when these programs are offered,
but generally they will be offered in the months of June and July.
 
Duration:
 
The average course is eight weeks long.  Students work with their tutor for four hours a
 day studying language, for a total of 160 hours of instruction.  If desired, an hour
of additional class may be added daily either in areas studies, politics, or culture,
for an additional charge.
 
Housing:
 
Participants will stay with Georgian host families.  This will give them authentic practice in
language as well as immersion in Georgian culture.  The families will provide a safe and
secure environment and as well as morning and evening meals.
 
Should a participant wish to find another kind of accommodation, they are free to do so at their own expense.
 
Cultural Excursions:
 
The school of languages will take the program’s participants on day or weekend-long excursions to
cultural and historical sites around Georgia.  The cost of these excursions is not covered in the fee. 
Most excursions, however, should be fairly inexpensive.
 
Insurance and Medical Facilities:
 
Program participants are responsible for obtaining their own insurance. 
There are several modern medical and dental facilities in Tbilisi if the need arises.
