   Women’s Education and Economic Development

Dr. Edward R. Raupp

 Abstract

This book reviews the literature of development with a view toward understanding
prior work on the effect of human capital investment, especially investment in education
for girls and women in East Africa, an area that has remained impoverished despite the
best efforts of indigenous and foreign entities. Women are disproportionately precluded
from education, perpetuating inefficiencies in the allocation of human resources and
impeding development. The book concludes with recommendations intended to accelerate
economic growth and development in East Africa. It emphasizes the importance of
endogenizing variables in causal models that may contribute to our understanding of
mechanisms of economic growth.
