Helsinki Summer School 2010
Helsinki Summer School is able to grant a limited number of full or partial scholarships. A full scholarship covers the registration fee, the course fee, and accommodation (a bed in a double or triple room at Eurohostel). It is not payable in cash and covers neither transportation nor living expenses (board). A partial scholarship covers the registration fee and the course fee, but not accommodation.
Please note that the number of applications is likely to exceed the number of available scholarships. This means that competition for the scholarships will be keen. In order to ensure your participation, we recommend that you take other steps to secure your own funding, for example, by turning first to your home institution or other local sources of financial aid. Please inform us as soon as possible if you have applied for a Helsinki Summer School scholarship but have managed to raise your own funds. We recommend that you try to raise funds to cover your transportation and/or living expenses as early as possible.
NB! If you apply for a scholarship, you can not book a place on the course before the scholarship competition results are announced.
Scholarship students
Helsinki Summer School provides a limited number of scholarships for talented students. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic performance, personal achievement and financial need. Scholarships are awarded only to applicants currently enrolled at a university or college. Scholarships are not granted to students living in Finland or studying at a Finnish university.
Scholarship recipients are obliged to take part in all course meetings and activities. They are also required to complete the final essay and/or the final exam according to the requirements of the course they are enrolled in. After successfully completing the course, the scholarship recipients will receive a scholarship diploma.
How to apply for a scholarship
Before submitting the scholarship application, please complete the online application form. Without the application form, we cannot process your scholarship application.
You need not pay the registration fee at this point. Please note, however, that we cannot guarantee you a place in any of the courses if you are not awarded a scholarship. Due to the high number of applications we receive each year, courses may already be fully booked by the time the scholarship competition results are announced.
The scholarship application should include the following documents:

Statement of purpose (mandatory) - Please explain why this course would be important to your academic studies or career and why you feel you deserve an HSS scholarship. Please also outline the reasons why you need a scholarship to cover the participation fees. If you have elected to register for more than one course, please explain why. Please keep in mind that students may only take one course at a time.

CV (mandatory) - A curriculum vitae should include personal information about you, your previous studies, your employment experience and your future plans.

Transcript of credits (mandatory - Please include a transcript of the credits (courses, exams) you have earned at your home university. The transcript should be in English. Or, you may send the transcript in its original language together with a translation in English. The transcript should include an explanation of the grading scale used. A photocopy of the transcript is sufficient. Please note: Only university/college transcripts are relevant! Other transcripts or certificates (e.g. high school transcripts or diplomas) will not be taken into consideration.

Certificate of English language skills (mandatory - Please include a brief written statement describing your language skills (for example if you have studied in an English-speaking country) or a copy of an international language proficiency test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). A photocopy of the certificate is sufficient. Language certificates in languages other than English will not be taken into consideration.

Recommendation(s) from teachers or professors (optional) - Recommendation(s) should be submitted to us in a sealed envelope with your other application documents. You may also ask your teacher to send the recommendation directly to us by regular mail or email (summer-school@helsinki.fi). The recommendation must include the referee's detailed contact information.
Application deadline
The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday, 9 April 2010. In other words, your application and all other relevant documents should have arrived at the Helsinki Summer School office by this date. Late applications will not be considered.

scholarship competition results
We will inform all scholarship applicants of the scholarship selection results individually through e-mail by the end of May 2010. Please be patient - no inquiries about the results will be answered before the end of May. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm the arrival of the scholarship applications or the attachments: we do not have the resources to answer any inquiries concerning them.
